He drew the inspiration for the script from more than a hundred books read and films watched.   \u003c\/p\u003e\r\r\u003cp\u003eThe script of the \u003ci\u003eAudiokaukas\u003c\/i\u003e is a peculiar concentrate of fantasy literature in the form of a story combined using collage principle. It is an episode of several days and nights in the life of a young talented chef, Denisas. At the beginning, the protagonist’s everyday life is depicted in fragments, presenting his extrovert, hedonistic character (Denisas = Greek Dionysos). The defining moment in the story occurs when Denisas, cooking one of his dishes, suffers food poisoning caused by false morel (Lat. \u003ci\u003eGyromitra esculenta\u003c\/i\u003e). Sometimes, all four appear in a single piece. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e The current recording recreates, in part, a 1996 performance at the National Philharmonic of Lithuania dedicated to Martinaitis’ music written between 1993 and 1996 and presented, for that occasion, under the title The Book of the Beginning and the End. This was a time of great transformation in the composer’s worldview prompted by a particularly appalling experience when his son almost died after a brutal assault in the street. Following the shocking incident, Martinaitis decisively chose the path of a deeply religious and humble Christian. The music in this compilation is branded with the motifs of apocalypse, repentance, obedience, and mercy. While using sound metaphors to underline the essential meaning of Christian symbols, the composer never really abandons his sarcastic alter ego. “All of our imagined talents are negligible, just like the mission of an artist. The CD presents hymns celebrating the Assumption of Mary and other songs worshipping the Virgin Mary from the Liturgical Year’s repertoire. These compositions are all distinguished by their specific melodic variants that can be defined as the Bernardine idiom of the Gregorian Chant and have been taken from \u003cem\u003eGraduale\u003c\/em\u003e RS F22:103 stored at the Wróblewski Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences in Vilnius. Dating back to the 14\u003csup\u003eth\u003c\/sup\u003e century, the manuscript is the oldest of the Bernardine liturgical books stored here. The \u003cem\u003eGraduale\u003c\/em\u003e was created in Italy and brought to Vilnius by the Bernardine monks from Kraków. In this recording, \u003cem\u003eProprium \u003c\/em\u003eand \u003cem\u003eOrdinarium Missae\u003c\/em\u003e have been taken from the manuscript F22:103 and two other Vilnius codices present works from the Liturgy of Hours.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe odd stanzas of the hymn \u003cem\u003eAve maris stella\u003c\/em\u003e, the only composition of the CD performed in \u003cem\u003ealternatim\u003c\/em\u003e with polyphonic parts, were taken from the manuscript F22:95 (\u003cem\u003eProcessionale –Hymnarius\u003c\/em\u003e), while the antiphon \u003cem\u003eAve\u003c\/em\u003e \u003cem\u003eMaria\u003c\/em\u003e and the responsory \u003cem\u003eGaude Maria Virgo\u003c\/em\u003e — from the Antiphonary F22:101. In this way, the CD covers a wide range of the Bernardines’ repertoire and the liturgical books used over the centuries in Vilnius.
