First edition of Vytautas Bacevičius' piano concerto on his 120th anniversary
Music Information Centre Lithuania, in collaboration with the Lithuanian Theater, Cinema, and Music Museum, has released the first orchestral work by Vytautas Bacevičius, the pioneer of Lithuanian modernism, Piano Concerto No. 1, Op. 12 (1929). The significance of this event is heightened by the fact that it is the first instrumental concerto in the history of Lithuanian music. The score was edited and prepared by pianist Gabrielius Alekna.
Vytautas Bacevičius was one of the most modern composers of interwar Lithuania, actively promoting innovative means of musical composition at the time. He composed his first concerto for piano while living in Paris.
The source for this publication was a photocopy of the composer's manuscript, stored in the Lithuanian Archives in Chicago. The edition was prepared in accordance with the highest standards of notation, based on authoritative music publishing guides. Thus, Piano Concerto No. 1, Op. 12 is not only a musical journey to the beginnings of modernism in Lithuania, but also a symbolic bridge between the past and the present, opening up opportunities to hear this work in concert halls.
