Meet Alexis Soriano-Monstavičius and His Music

Music Information Centre Lithuania recently published some digital sheet music by Alexis Soriano-Monstavičius, a Spanish-Lithuanian orchestral conductor and composer. He ranks among the most celebrated Spanish conductors of his generation and has a deep connection with Lithuania.

“My relation with Lithuania is intense because I hold a Lithuanian nationality,” says Alexis Soriano-Monstavičius. “My mother, Beata Monstavičius, is a Lithuanian pianist and the former President of the Lithuanian Community in Spain. My home was a place to stay for many visiting Lithuanian artists. I remember how conductor Algis Žiūraitis and mezzo-soprano Elena Obraztsova came to our home when they first traveled to Spain, and how I met Maestro Saulius Sondeckis and his family for the first time.”

Alexis Soriano-Monstavičius conducted his first Lithuanian orchestra, that of the Lithuanian Academy of Music, in 1993, and the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra in 1994. Later on, he has worked with almost all Lithuanian orchestras: the National Symphony Orchestra, the Kaunas City Symphony Orchestra, the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre Orchestra, the Klaipėda Chamber Orchestra, the Vilnius Municipal St. Christopher Chamber Orchestra, the Vilnius Sinfonietta, and the Šiauliai Chamber orchestra. He brought the St. Christopher Chamber Orchestra to Spain, to the Contemporary Music Festival in Alicante. He also worked with many Lithuanian musicians, such as opera singers Joana Gedmintaitė, Tomas Pavilionis, violinist Ingrida Rupaitė, just to mention a few.

Nowadays, as a conductor, he works in Lithuania with the Klaipėda Chamber Orchestra thanks to the initiative of Mindaugas Bačkus. He also has projects with the Lithuanian National Symphony orchestra and with soloists, such as Justina Gringytė.
In May 2014 he received the prize of the Čiurlionis Foundation in Lithuania for his achievements in music. As a composer, he has written for piano, chamber ensembles, and orchestral forces, having premièred works in Spain, Russia, Germany, Ethiopia, and the USA. He is a member of the Spanish Composer’s society and has held different teaching positions and given conducting masterclasses around the world.
