Description
Feliksas Bajoras (b. 1934) is one of the most creative figures in contemporary Lithuanian music. He consistently strives not to rely on past discoveries but to steer his music in new directions. This compact disc features new works that have not yet been performed. As a quintessentially uncompromising, solitary creator, Bajoras sets the highest standards for both himself and the performers of his music.Chamber works occupy a dominant place in Bajoras’s oeuvre, which encompasses nearly 400 compositions, including an opera, an oratorio, five symphonies, and numerous quartets. He has made particularly significant contributions to vocal music, with these works becoming benchmarks for national musical expression. A national character is also discernible in his instrumental works. Like a modern-day Mohican safeguarding the heritage of ancient Lithuanian music while influenced by modernism, Bajoras continues to seek constant renewal. Many of his compositions reflect his search for a distinct sound that maintains an intuitive connection with the living Lithuanian language.
In an era when a composition is often reduced to a one-off project with little regard for the precision of each sound, F. Bajoras’s music embodies a contrasting, traditional approach, where every sound is irreplaceable, carrying a powerful emotional charge, rhythmic energy, and intricate connections not only within individual pieces but also with other works and, ultimately, with tradition itself.
The timbral diversity revealed on this recording invites listeners to explore ever-new sonic colors while appreciating the composer’s deep understanding of the unique characteristics of different instruments. These recordings also provide insight into the foundational elements of Bajoras’s style, one of the most prominent features being his polyphonic approach to musical development, ranging from dialogue to polylogue, with each part enriched by its own nuances.
