Description

Edited by Sergėjus Okruško

In this piece for solo piano, dedicated to the pianist Sergėjus Okruško, I sought greater change, diversity, contrast, and expressiveness, moving away from my preferred models of one-mood music. Although the composition is based on a carefully calculated structure of musical time, the numerical values of its irregular rhythmic divisions remain hidden: notes without stems have no precise duration. The spatial notation allows the performer to follow freer, more intuitive principles of performance rather than calculate regular metric units. Hence the title: periods of hidden or invisible time are filled with changing musical material. This sequence of thirty episodes, or modes, resembles a cycle of variations. The duration of the piece depends on the performer’s choice of tempi and is approximately 11–13 minutes.
